In reality, virtually all processed foods are unhealthy for human consumption, even if they are low-fat or low-carb. Thus, the argument about low-fat diets versus low-carb diets ignores the far more important question: processed foods versus unprocessed foods.
What is an unprocessed food? These are foods made from natural ingredients -- the way foods are found in nature. All fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, herbs, and fresh meat products are unprocessed foods. |
| REPPED: With all the focus on low-carb versus low-fat diets in the news these days, you might think those are the only two options to consider when it comes to losing weight and reversing obesity. Proponents of one diet or the other debate over the merits of their particular dieting strategy, but neither seem to recognize that the entire "low-carb versus low-fat diet" argument only serves as a distraction from the real solution to weight loss: shifting to a unprocessed, non-manufactured foods. |

V2 pounds ground turkey (or beef) 1 packet McCormick Taco Seasoning 3A cup water low-carb whole wheat or corn tortillas
Follow the package directions—break the ground turkey into small pieces and brown them in a large nonstick frying pan over medium heat. Continue to break up the turkey pieces with a spatula until they are small. Drain the fat. Sprinkle in the seasoning and water; mix everything thoroughly. Continue cooking the turkey at a simmer until most of the water is gone. Spoon the ground turkey into low-carb whole wheat or corn tortillas. |

The low-carb diet craze of recent years has confused many people about the role of grains in their weight-reducing plan. In fact, research shows that whole grains make a critical contribution to successful weight loss for all the reasons outlined above. Many people also have found that low-carb diets made them feel poorly and lacking in energy and, at least partly for these reasons, are difficult if not impossible to stick with in the long term. |

And that's precisely why you continued to see the headlines dominated by the rather worthless discussion of low-fat versus low-carb diets. It's a classic shell game deception, all orchestrated for your entertainment by the very same industry that's giving you chronic disease. |
| Proponents of one diet or the other debate over the merits of their particular dieting strategy, but neither seem to recognize that the entire "low-carb versus low-fat diet" argument only serves as a distraction from the real solution to weight loss: shifting to a unprocessed, non-manufactured foods.
The real test about weight loss should compare diets consisting of processed foods versus unprocessed foods. What is a processed food? It's a food that is manufactured and typically sold in pretty packaging at a very high markup price over the cost of its basic ingredients. |
| While Americans continue to debate the merits of low-carb versus low-fat diets, the real truth about how to lose weight never gets openly discussed: and that is to stop buying manufactured foods and turn to natural foods / whole foods the way they are found in nature.
Quiz time: can you guess why there is never a discussion about moving away from manufactured foods? Simple: manufactured foods are extremely profitable. Grocery stores make far more money on manufactured foods than fresh vegetables. |

That's why when the Atkins diet storm hit the food industry in 2003, bread and pasta got a quick redesign (dialing back the carbs; boosting the proteins) while poor unreconstructed potatoes and carrots were left out in the carbohydrate cold. (The low-carb indignities visited on bread and pasta, two formerly "traditional foods that everyone knows," would never have been possible had the imitation rule not been tossed out in 1973. Who would ever buy imitation spaghetti? But of course that is precisely what low-carb pasta is. |

The low-carb Lie
To help you understand how low-carb diets work, I want to share a personal experience about what happened to me when I was fulfilling a dream of competing in several bodybuilding contests. Although in my 20s and early 30s I always trained hard and was in good physical shape, when I was 33 I lived the life of a bodybuilder for approximately two years. Keep in mind that I do not have the natural genetics of a bodybuilder and I have not spent my life pursuing the perfect physique. |

Low-Carb Diet for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
WHEN I HEAR the three words polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the first thing I think of is insulin resistance And the next thing I think of is low-carb diet Let me explain.
PCOS is both a metabolic and a hormonal disorder. No one knows exactly what causes it, but there are a number of risk factors (see below). As the name suggests, it's a syndrome, which means it's more like a collection of multiple symptoms than an actual disease. |

The scientists at Aberdeen's Rowett Research Institute found that prolonged adherence to the low-carb diet may adversely affect the gut bacterial populations that beneficially produce a substance called butyrate, which is important for keeping the gut healthy and preventing colorectal cancer. Thankfully, low-carb diets recently lost popularity with the public since the approach has been shown to put followers at a higher risk for clogged arteries, heart attack, and possibly colorectal cancer as well.

THE GOOD NUTRITION GUIDE
I was in a restaurant recently, looking at the menu, when I noticed a very peculiar "low-carb" meal option: a massive plate of pasta topped with vegetables, otherwise known as pasta primavera. The vast majority of calories in the meal clearly came from carbohydrates. How could it be "low-carb"? Was it a misprint? I didn't think so. At various other times I've noted that salads, breads and even cinnamon buns are labeled "low-carb," even though their ingredient lists demonstrate that, in fact, the bulk of calories are provided by carbohydrates. What's going on? |

Ketones have a strong characteristic odor and are the reason many people following a low-carb diet experience bad breath similar to the breath of alcohol intoxication.
Is ketosis necessary for weight loss? Absolutely not, and while ketosis is usually not dangerous (though it can be life-threatening if severe, especially in a diabetic), it is certainly not a particularly healthful state. In addition, one of the major problems with a low-carb diet or even a very low-calorie diet is that they inevitably produce a loss of significant amounts of muscle mass. |

What is an unprocessed food? These are foods made from natural ingredients -- the way foods are found in nature. Once again, this is a "missing piece of the puzzle" that helps explain some of the mysterious side effects some people experience on a low-carb diet. It isn't the low-carb diet that's to blame: it's the MSG still in your diet!
Food manufacturers hide MSG in other ingredients
We've seen a food industry go from blatantly displaying the use of MSG in its food products to creating a "clean label industry" whose pumose is to design ingredient and food product labels that will appeal to consumers while hiding the presence of MSG. |

| Atkins and other low-carb diets include a hefty portion of omega-6s, which can create health risks and may contribute to chronic brain inflammation, setting the stage for brain impairment.
What to do: Eat one serving per day of ome-ga-3s—found in high-fat fish, such as salmon and tuna, and in avocados, olive oil, nuts and other foods. Also consider a daily supplement of 1,000 milligrams (mg) of fish oil.
•Fight free radicals. Free radicals, the cell-damaging byproducts of metabolism, are always present in the body, including the brain, causing cells to lose structure and function. |

Nearly everyone enjoys eating fresh fruit, so it's a far more enjoyable diet than, say, the Atkins or low-carb diets. It's also a diet rich in raw foods, and nutritional research over the last few years increasingly tells us that raw foods contain powerful medicinal compounds that have wide-ranging healing effects on the body. Added to this is the fact that most consumers simply don't eat sufficient quantities of fresh produce in their diets, so experiencing a fruit flush diet for a few days is an excellent way to boost your fruit intake and help nourish your body using nature's best options. |

If you are gluten tolerant and your weight and blood sugar are normal, you can occasionally indulge in one of several grain products. low-carb whole-wheat tortillas contain about 4 grams of carbs per tortilla.
European-style black breads, with obvious seeds and husks, have a bit more in the way of carbs, but they also have considerably larger fiber particles. Buckwheat is not a grain and, aside from its calories or carbs, should not cause grain-related problems.

In fact, you should cut out desserts altogether for these three weeks—don't even think about buying the so-called low-carb desserts or supplements that are now filling the supermarket. For this diet to work, you really have to cut back on carbohydrates, not substitute one for another.
You should cut out fruits, too (they're loaded with sugar), and eat only green leafy vegetables—no beets or carrots, and no tomatoes or tomato products, such as ketchup. Plus, you should drink at least eight glasses of water a day. |

If you want an occasional piece of bread, opt for a European-style dense black bread, which you can find with other prepackaged breads, or La Tortilla Factory's low-carb whole-wheat tortillas. Many prepackaged breads and rolls also contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.
Most supermarkets have a separate section with breads, buns, rolls, and tortillas sold in plastic bags. Whole-grain breads might seem healthier, but some are little more than white bread with molasses to give it a brown color. Some breads, brown and white, contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. |

What's more, low-carb diets are usually high in protein. The animal protein that is commonly emphasized in these diets can be hard on your kidneys. MSG risks are even higher for low-carb dieters
One of the more startling facts about MSG has special relevance for those on low-carb diets: MSG has been shown to be more damaging in the absence of dietary glucose.
In other words, a diet high in carbohydrates and sugars helps moderate the negative effects of MSG. But a diet low in carbohydrates apparently allows MSG to do its worst damage:
When rats were fed glucose plus large amounts of MSG, the amount of brain damage seen was considerably less than when glucose was denied. This has also been shown in cell cultures. |

Although the late diet doctor is, of course, best known for launching his much-criticized or much-lauded (depending upon with whom you're talking) low-carb diet, Dr. Atkins clearly deserves much of the credit for educating millions of Americans about the health and weight-loss benefits of eschewing sweets and quickie carbs.
All his books, including Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution, which first hit the bestseller lists in the 1970s, have repeated his self-described "favorite dictum: avoid sugar. |
